Finger knitting is a way kids can weave their own scarves. Since the project is so quick, kids can knit one for everyone on their Christmas list.

Once kids have mastered the simple steps of finger knitting, they’re ready to tackle making a thick, winter scarf. For a little practice beforehand, kids can give knitting a headband or belt a try.

Materials for a Quick and Simple Scarf

For this project, choose bulky yarn. Some suitable brands are; “Lion Brand Wool-Ease Chunky, Wool Ease Thick ’n Quick, Jiffy Thick ‘n Quick,” or “Chenille Thick and Quick.” The thicker the yarn, the easier it is for tiny fingers to manipulate. Bulky yarn will also make for a quicker and plusher scarf.

Instructions for the Scarf

A comfortable length for an adult scarf is somewhere between 60-65 inches, but a child’s scarf will be shorter. A rule of thumb is to make the scarf a few inches shorter than the person who’ll wear it.

If kids are making the scarf for themselves or someone who already knows about the coming surprise, they can knit a chain to the length they suspect will work and try it out before removing it from their fingers. If the length is good, they can tie off and start on another chain.

To make the width of a scarf, kids will need to knit three chains of equal lengths for adults, and two for children. They can join these by cutting a piece of yarn slightly longer than a chain and attaching it to the bottom. Next, kids will lay another chain beside the first, and weave their edges together by threading the yarn back and forth down the middle where the two sides meet. If the scarf is for an adult, they’ll tie off and repeat with one more chain.

Finishing the Scarf with Tassels

To add a finishing touch, kids can make tassels for the ends of the scarf. They’ll need to find a book whose cover is eight inches or cut a piece of cardboard to that width.

  1. Wrap the yarn around the book several times.
  2. Cut ends to make individual eight inch pieces of yarn.
  3. Combine four of these pieces in a group.
  4. Fold them in half.
  5. Poke the folded part through the very end of the scarf.
  6. Pass cut ends through the loop that is poking through the scarf and pull tight.
  7. Continue to make tassels all the way across the end of the scarf.

If kids enjoyed finger knitting a wooly winter scarf, they might also like to learn how to make a matching hat, muff, purse, and even shawl. With a little time and a few added techniques, they can knit up an entire winter ensemble.
