Start off the school year right with fun back to school crafts. Pencil holders, school supply boxes, homework totes, and display clips are just what the teacher ordered.

Celebrate the return of the new school year by crafting personalized back to school supplies that are not only handy student must-haves, but fun to make. These back to school crafts can easily be created at home or in the classroom.

Pencil Holder

Create a personalized pencil holder with an empty food can, a little paint and some stickers. Begin by cleaning the can and removing the outer label. Next, paint the can in the desired color and allow to dry completely. Once dry, personalize the can, using a fat felt-tip marker to write the student's name, and decorate with school-related stickers, which can be purchased online or wherever scrap booking supplies are sold. Homemade personalized pencil holders make great teachers' presents too!

School Supplies Box

No more searching for erasers or glue sticks in the household "junk" draw. Keep school supplies neat and organized in a unique, handmade school supplies box. All that's needed to craft this handy organizer is a shoe box, paint or wrapping paper, and some whimsical stickers. Start by painting the shoe box in a bright color or wrapping with wrapping paper printed with a fun design. If wrapping the box, make sure to wrap the lid and box pieces separately. Once wrapped or paint is dry, decorate the box with stickers, and personalize with the student's name.

Homework Tote

Excuses like the "Dog ate my homework" would become obsolete if every student had a handy homework tote to keep their papers safe and organized. Crafting a homework tote is both fun and easy for kids. All that's needed to create this useful back to school craft is a plain, canvas tote bag, foam stamps in desired shape and some fabric paint in a variety of colors.

Pour a little bit of each color of paint in individual containers. Choose a stamp and dip in desired paint color, gently shaking excess paint off stamp before using. Decorate the tote by stamping image in desired spot. Continue stamping the bag until desired look is achieved. Use a permanent marker to write "My Homework Tote" somewhere on the bag. Allow tote to dry completely before using. A personalized tote bag makes a unique gift for any occasion. Modify personalization to create bags for traveling, craft supplies, etc.

Display Clip

Kids -- and moms and dads -- love to display their favorite school projects on the refrigerator door for all to see. Make a unique back to school magnet designed especially for this purpose. A ruler, two clothespins, adhesive magnet strips, tacky glue and a permanent marker are needed to craft this fun back to school project. Glue one clothespin on each side of the ruler, approximately 2-inches from the edge. On the space between the clothespins, write something to the effect of "My Special Papers." Once the glue has dried, turn the ruler over and attach a magnet strip on each side of the back of the ruler. All that's left to do is stick the display clip on the fridge and use the clothespins to hold the ends of the desired display piece.
