Making an attractive candle holder can be fun and easy. Giving little hands a chance to make a special gift and older kids can create a masterpiece with some imagination.

Besides, who doesn’t like candles? And what grandma did not melt when presented with a gift made by a special kid? It is also an excellent way for mom to display an artpiece throughout the house.

Maybe a homemade candle holder is just the gift or project needed for the occasion. They can be made from baby food jars for votives or larger glass jars for pillar candles. The candle holders look nice as a group on a table or hang from the ceiling and they are easy enough for even the youngest “artist.”

Decorations grouped in odd numbers are more pleasing to the eye, so make several using complementary colors or different hues of the same color.

The flame shinning through the tissue paper gives the illusion of stain glass. If candles are an issue, fill the containers with other scented items, such as potpourri or use a battery operated candle.

This technique will also look good on cookie or candy jars and it would make a beautiful vase. For a different look, cut the tissue paper into shapes and designs or make a picture using the paper for a mosaic effect.

This craft allows kids to work on their skill of tearing paper and using glue, which they may try on the library book if not given an appropriate place and project to practice this technique. So give them a safe place to practice it

Candle Holder Materials Needed

  • Glass jar
  • Tissue paper
  • Glue
  • Wire (floral wire works well)
  • Candle

How to Make a Candle Holder

  1. Start with a clean glass jar. A baby food jar works well.
  2. Tear tissue paper into penny to quarter size pieces. Use different colors or hues of one color.
  3. Place drops of glue all over the outside of the jar and stick the tissue paper to the glue.
  4. Let dry and place candle inside.

To Make the Holders Hang from the Ceiling

  1. Cut two pieces of wire approximately 16 inches each. Take one wire and wrap it around the jar under the grooves of the mouth, where the lid twist on, and twist the ends tightly together. One end should be at least a foot long and the other end can be tucked to the side of the jar after it is twisted.
  2. The second wire should be wrapped around the jar in the same manner as the first, only this one will twist on the other side.
  3. Once both wires are securely tightened, take the long ends and twist them together. Leave 1 to 2 inches at the end.
  4. Bend the top wires into loops. They can be formed into a heart. This is used to hook the holder to the ceiling.

This candle holder can be made from objects left around the house, such as an empty cheese dip glass jar and tissue paper from the last birthday party. It is a fun craft to do with all ages and can take only a few minutes, or if the artist is making patterns or a picture, it could take much longer.
