Clay pots can be used as gifts or decorations for the home. Kids will have a lot of fun making these easy projects with little supervision.

A clay pot presents interesting and fun crafts for children of all ages. You can take a plain clay pot and turn it into almost anything. Clay pots are widely available at any store that sells gardening and craft supplies, and you will be able to find all sizes, from tiny clay pots to very large pots. They are inexpensive, too, often costing just a couple of dollars a piece. Here are some easy clay pot crafts that will keep you and your child busy.

Clay Pot Gift

This makes a great gift for teachers, daycare workers, or even grandmothers who appreciate handmade gifts. Start by purchasing a regular sized clay pot (try a 4 inch pot) and some acrylic paints. Let your child paint the pot in any way. Just make sure to wear an old shirt as acrylic paint does stain. After the paint is dried, use a permanent marker (such as a Sharpie) and write, “You are my sweet pea!” Then fill a small bag with potting soil and place it inside the pot. Add a pair of gardening gloves or even a small shovel or spade. Next, place a package of sweet pea seeds in the pot as well.

Clay Pot Bird Bath

For this project you will need two large-sized clay pots, one larger than the other. Turn them upside down with the largest on the bottom and stack the smaller one on top. If it doesn’t sit well, then it is either too larger or too small, so try another size. You will also need liquid nail product, paint and a large clay bottom or saucer. Start by painting the pots in any color or pattern your child chooses. There are many ways to spruce up plain clay pot, but this is probably the easiest method. Next, invert your largest pot and apply the liquid nail product around the bottom rim and invert the other pot on top. Next, glue the saucer on top of the smaller pot. If you want to protect the paint, spray the whole project with an acrylic sealer. Let dry and then place your birdbath outside and fill the saucer with water.

Clay Pot Wind Chimes

You will need one 12-inch dowel rod or bamboo rod, 4 small clay pots in progressive sizes (1 to 4 inches), heavy fishing line or other string and paint. Paint each clay pot in a different color and allow to dry. Cut the string into progressive sizes and string it through the hole in the bottom of the pot. Knot it so stays in place. If you are having trouble making the knot large enough, use a washer against the hole and then knot the string through the washer. Tie the string on the dowel rod and hang up outside.
