Here are some easy, thoughtful, unique ways to say "I love you!" to a mother from a child.

Handmade items are the perfect gifts for Mother’s Day. Moms will appreciate and remember the thoughtfulness behind a present that was made especially for them by a child. Here are some simple, inexpensive, creative craft ideas for children.

Handprint Garden

One of the images mothers love best is their children’s handprints. There are all kinds of crafts that revolve around handprints - for example, you can go to the local pottery painting shop and make a plate for a mom with her kids’ names and birthdates; she’ll treasure it forever.

One of the easy ways to capture handprints is with a handprint garden. You’ll need a large piece of construction paper, poster board, or craft foam. Along the bottom of the picture, draw a row of grass using a green marker. Or, you can create grass by cutting out green craft foam or felt. Another creative idea for grass is to use the green plastic ‘grass’ used in supermarket sushi packages - ask; they’ll give you extra.

First, trace the children's handprints (or multiple handprints of one child) at varying levels across the page. Use different colored markers for these handprint ‘flowers’ and the hands don’t all have to be facing in the same direction. Be creative! Add glitter, fabric paint, or other items from the scrapbooking section of your favorite craft store. Let the kids participate - they can draw the ‘stems’, add a drawing of a butterfly or sun, or other details. Don’t forget to have them sign and date the back! Framing this project would create a treasured keepsake for any mom.

Framed Handprint Kit

Don’t feel like assembling craft supplies? Simply order a Wooden Mother's Day Handprint Frames Craft Kit from Oriental Trading- everything you need to create an easy, memorable gift for Mother’s Day is included- and at only $11.95 for a set of six! You’ll be able to give a few as gifts.

Mom Flowerpots

Another creative, inexpensive way to create a unique Mother’s Day craft is to make a flowerpot. You simply need terra cotta pots, paints, potting soil and a small seedling (geraniums or pansies work well) or even a packet of seeds to grow something new! Kids will have so much fun painting the pots and could write Mom a note about “Growing Together” to be included with the card. This creates a fun activity that can be enjoyed by mom and child alike as they care for the young plants. Again, if you don’t feel like gathering the materials, you can order kits (12 Color-Your-Own Mom Flowerpots at $14.95 a dozen).

So be creative this year in celebrating your favorite mom!
