Celebrate Autumn with Fun Things to Do

Fall is a time of cooler weather, shorter days, and the smell of freshly fallen leaves. Make some fun Fall crafts with your child to celebrate the season.

Making Fall crafts is a lot of fun. There are so many possibilities to be creative with natural materials. Here are a few crafts that you can make to help celebrate autumn (Fall) with your child. The materials are inexpensive and most can be found lying around your house.

Fall Finger Puppets

Materials:

  • Cardboard tube
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Markers

Directions:

  1. Cut tubes into 1" segments. Cut a segment in half. Size the tube segments for the fingers of the person who will be using the finger puppets and tape them together on the inside.
  2. Draw pictures of fall things, such as an animated leaf, scarecrow, animated pumpkin, animated corn stalk, etc. Cut the patterns out.
  3. Glue each face on the side of a tube piece.
  4. Wear the puppets to put on a silly puppet play for friends and family.

Fall Festival Plate

Materials:

  • Sheet of Styrofoam
  • Wax paper
  • Paper plate
  • Acrylic paints, various colors
  • Foam brush
  • Ribbon
  • Serving dish and doily
  • Fall shape cookie cutters (pumpkins, corn, squash, apples)
  • Silk leaves in fall colors

Directions:

  1. Use cookie cutters to cut out Styrofoam food shapes.
  2. Place Styrofoam cut-outs on wax paper.
  3. Paint the foods their appropriate colors using acrylic paints. Let dry.
  4. Arrange the food on the doily, which should be on top of the serving dish.
  5. Add decorative embellishments such as fall leaves and ribbons to decorate the plate of food.

Pumpkin Paper Plate

Materials:

  • Paper plate
  • Pencil
  • Tempera paint, orange and black
  • Paintbrush
  • Hole punch
  • Green string

Directions:

  1. Paint the paper plate with orange paint.
  2. Draw a face on the pumpkin using a pencil.
  3. Paint over the face that you drew with black paint.
  4. Punch a hole in the plate and thread a string to hang up your pumpkin.

Tree Bark Barrette

Materials:

  • Piece of tree bark
  • Metal barrette
  • Gold acrylic paint
  • Glue
  • Sequins and other embellishments
  • Clear nail polish

Directions:

  1. Paint gold highlights on the rough side of a piece of bark.
  2. Glue the barrette to the smooth side of the bark.
  3. Apply clear nail polish on top of the gold paint to keep paint from chipping.
  4. Glue on sequins and other embellishments for decorate your barrette.

Scarecrow Craft

Materials:

  • Baby food jar
  • Brown, red, and orange felt pieces
  • Buttons
  • Wiggly eyes
  • Raffia
  • Tacky glue

Directions:

  1. Wrap brown felt around a clean baby food jar, while the jar is upside down. Tie the felt with a piece of raffia.
  2. Glue more raffia on the top of the jar to make the scarecrow's hair.
  3. Glue on the wiggly eyes, a nose from a piece of orange felt, and a mouth using red felt.
  4. Cut out a donut shape from the black felt. Glue to the top of the scarecrow's head.
  5. Cut a piece of black felt into a cone shape for the hat. Glue the hat to one side. Decorate the hat with red trim (felt).
