Make Unique Napkin Rings Using Toilet Paper Rolls, Angela Krueger
Simple crafts made by preschoolers and toddlers using toilet paper rolls can help with school preparation and also decorate the table for a festive fall dinner.

A very versatile craft material, empty toilet paper rolls are a basic staple of any craft supply cupboard as they appeal to young kids, especially preschoolers and toddlers. Whether the rolls are used as a tool in educational activities or as inspiration for a craft idea, fall is a good time for young kids to get creative and learn.

Toilet Paper Roll Animal Den with Finger Puppet

Materials:

  • brown toilet paper roll
  • old gloves
  • paint
  • googly eyes
  • white glue

  1. Help the kids cut a two inch section off the toilet paper roll.
  2. Cut a finger off of an old glove and decorate it with paint and googly eyes to make a skunk, bear or other hibernating animal finger puppet.
  3. Show the children that by wearing the finger puppet, they can have the animal pop in and out of the toilet paper roll den.
This craft is perfect for themes on hibernation and the puppet can be used as a prop for a story such as The Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson [Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, 2002].

Toilet Paper Roll Sorting Activity

Materials:

  • various sizes of toilet paper and paper towel rolls
  • different colours of paint

  1. Let the kids paint the toilet paper rolls different colours.
  2. Once the paint is dry, teach the kids how to sort the rolls by colour and size.
Sorting activities help toddlers and preschoolers recognize patterns which is an important school readiness skill. The painted toilet paper rolls can also be used for three-dimensional building activities.

Thanksgiving Toilet Paper Roll Napkin Rings

Materials:

  • brown toilet paper rolls
  • beans and seeds of various colours and sizes
  • ribbon and raffia
  • white glue

  1. Cut the toilet paper rolls into 1 ½ inch sections and give each child four sections.
  2. Help the kids sort the seeds by colour and shape before deciding which ones they would like to use for the craft.
  3. Let the kids spread white glue around the outside of the toilet paper roll section help them attach the beans and seeds.
  4. Once the glue has dried use the napkin rings for a festive autumn table setting.
