Draw, cut and paste circles to create a fun card or picture with your kids. This activity will help with finger muscles, brain development and prepare them for school.

This activity can help children with their fine motor skills through drawing, cutting and pasting. Preschoolers and kindergarteners can do this activity with assistance and most elementary school children should be able to do this on their own.

Craft that Kids of All Ages Can Enjoy and Learn From

The nice thing about this craft is that if you have children of varying ages, they can all be involved. The older ones can help the younger ones, and the creation of different creatures and things using paper circles can allow for creativity for all ages. If you are doing this with younger children or those who need more help, try to let kids do a little bit of each step and then take over, or you can delegate them to do parts of the process and you do the others. So for example, if drawing circles is very hard for them, you can get them to try it out and then stop before they get too frustrated. Then let them do more cutting or pasting if that is easier for them. You want to get them to practice new skills, but you want the activity to be fun too.

You will need:

  • Construction paper in different colors
  • Scissors
  • Glue/paste
  • Wet rag for little ones to wipe sticky hands

What to do:

Pick out one 8 by 11’’ piece of construction paper in a color of your choice. You can create the art on the whole sheet and then hang it up on the wall or fridge as a picture. You can also fold it in half and make a card to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day or a birthday in a spring or summer month.

Draw Circles

Draw circles on construction paper of different colors. This is also a nice way to get rid of small scraps of constructions paper. Store leftover bits from other crafts and keep them in a ziplock bag or box to use for this activity. Make the circles about the size of your fingernail if you are using 8 by 11’’ paper. Make a few larger or smaller ones if you want too. It’s nice to have a larger orange or yellow circle to use as a sun.

After you draw the circles, cut them out. Then put them in piles so kids can see how many of each color they have to work with.

Making Grass

To make the grass that will go on the bottom of the paper, cut out a rectangle about an inch thick that will run along the bottom of the whole paper if you are creating a picture or half the sheet if you are making a card. Then make cuts to the top part of the “grass” that go about 1/3 to 1/2 through the paper. This is a task that smaller children can do, and it can take them awhile. So while they are doing this. You can cut up a lot of circles for them.

Create Plants and Creatures with Circles

Create plants, animals and anything your imagination can come up with.

Put three green circles together to make a clover, and put four together to make a four-leaf clover. Use a green felt to make a stem or cut out a thin green rectangular strip to be the stem. You can use small scraps of green construction paper to make leaves.

Put five or six circles of the same color in a tight circle. Then choose a circle of a different color and put it in the centre to make the centre of the flower.

You can put five to seven circles together to make a caterpillar. You can draw a face on the first circle. Use a bigger circle to create a sun. Use long thin rectangular strips as rays for the sun. Use one green one and put antenna on it to make it a bug. Use a red one and put black dots on it and antenna to make it a ladybug. There are many more things that you can create out of circles that make for great cards and pictures that can be used for many spring holidays.

This is a great activity that can get the whole family involved. It’s also excellent for helping young kids develop the skills they need for school by working on their fine motor skills and stimulating their brains. As well, the end result is a piece of art that can help your child celebrate and enjoy a spring holiday. You can do the same technique for St. Patrick's Day, the first day of Spring, Easter, Mother's Day or even use as a birthday card for someone with a birthday in spring or summer.
