Use common supplies to make sweet little chicks to use as a centerpiece or decorate a wreath with your children.
These cute chicks are super easy and super fast to make. Plus, they use common household items and so they are an ideal craft project for when you are short on supplies.
Age Recommendation
3 and older (assistance is necessary with the little ones to prevent the crushing of eggshells)
Supplies
clean eggshells
cotton balls
yellow food coloring
plastic bag
google eyes
orange construction paper
scissors
adhesive
plastic grass, decorative baskets, fruit or pudding snack cups, or egg cartons
Instructions
Put the cotton balls in a plastic bag.
Add a small amount of water and a few drops of food coloring.
Knead the contents of the bag until the cotton balls are yellow.
Squeeze the liquid out of the cotton balls and then place them on a paper towel to dry (this needs to be done several days in advance).
Stuff the eggshells with cotton balls. If the chick is poking his head out of the egg, the final cottonball may need to be glued in order to hold it in place.
Adhere two google eyes to the head.
Fold a scrap of orange construction paper in half. Cut a triangle on the fold.
Unfold the triangle so that it is a diamond. This will be the baby chicks open beak.
Glue the beak to the chick’s face.
Line a basket or snack cup with grass to make a nest or tuck the chicks into egg cartons.
About the Sample Project
The cotton balls take a long time to dry. It is helpful to heat them in the microwave, however, it is not a good idea to heat them for more than thirty seconds at a time. They can catch fire.
Ideas and Suggestions
The chicks look like they are begging for food if you put the eyes and beak on the top of their head.
Save the cotton filling from medication and supplement bottles to use for the chicks’ bodies.
A few of these chicks would look sweet tucked away in a spring floral arrangement or added to a seasonal wreath.
Try cracking your eggs on the narrow end so that the opening is not quite so large.
Cleaning eggs is best done immediately after they’ve been cracked. Use warm water to rinse them out and rub a finger along the inside to remove the white film that lines the egg.
Self-adhesive google eyes are very handy for this project.
If you wanted to use these as an Easter craft or as Easter Eggs, it would be fun to dye the eggs different colors, perhaps even dying the chicks to match or coordinate.
