There are some very simple glue recipes you can make in your own kitchen. Here are some great recipes for making your own glue at home.
Your children will enjoy helping you make these glues and pastes, as well as using them afterwards to make some craft projects. All of these glues are nontoxic, and you can add food coloring for a variety of colors. These gluey substances need to be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
Homemade Glue Recipe
You Need
Small Bowl
Small Saucepan
3/4 cup of water
1 teaspoon of white vinegar
2 tablespoons of corn syrup
2 tablespoons of cornstarch
3/4 cup of cold water
Cooking Directions
Mix the water, vinegar, and corn syrup in the saucepan.
Bring to a rolling, full boil.
Mix the cold water and the cornstarch in the bowl.
Add this slowly to the hot mixture in the saucepan, and stir continually until the mixture begins to boil again.
Boil the mixture for one minute and then remove the saucepan from the heat.
When it is cooled, pour it into a container and let sit overnight before you use it.
Homemade Glue Made with Cheesecloth
You Need
1/4 cup of milk
1 tablespoon of white vinegar
A pinch of baking soda
Cheesecloth for filter
Mixing Instructions
Pour the milk into a small cup. Add the vinegar. Stir mixture for one minute. It will form clumps and a clear liquid.
Put the cheesecloth over another small cup. Push it down a bit into the middle of the cup.
Slowly pour the mixture into the cheesecloth, while you are holding the cloth in place. You will notice most of the liquid filtering through the cheesecloth. Gently squeeze more of the liquid out of the cheesecloth.
Scrape the clump you have left into an empty cup. Add the baking soda and stir well.
Homemade Flour Paste
You Need
Saucepan
1/2 cup of flour
Cold water
Food coloring
Cooking Directions
Put the flour in the saucepan.
Add just enough cold water until it is the consistency of cream.
Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring continuously.
Add food coloring, if you wish.
This paste will take awhile to dry.
Homemade Paper-Mache Paste
You Need
Large saucepan
1 cup of water
1/4 cup of flour
5 cups of boiling water
Cooking Directions
Put one cup of flour into the saucepan.
Slowly add the flour and mix until it is runny and thin.
Heat to a gentle boil and stir continuously for two to three minutes.
Cool before you use it.
Homemade No-Cook Paste
You Need
Small bowl
1/2 cup of flour
Water
Salt
Mixing Directions
In the bowl, mix the flour with just enough water to make a gooey, but not runny paste.
Add a pinch of salt.
Use with care, as it takes a while to dry.
All of these glues and pastes are a nice alternative to some of the other glues available in the craft stores. Let your children use the colored paste to make beautiful pictures or other craft projects. Another nice plus about these glues and pastes is that they easily wash off of clothes, hands, and yes, even hair.
