Fall craft ideas can brighten the home and preserve children's handprints for years to come. For preschool fall crafts, here's a fall leaves craft parents will love.

Children’s hands change from month to month in their early years. Why else are there so many clever crafts for kids like handprint reindeer, turkeys, and butterflies? Parents want to capture that unique shape in every season. With preschool fall crafts in the form of this fall leaves craft, kids embellish their handprints with bright autumn leaves to make a sun catcher glowing with the colors of fall.

Fall Leaves Craft Materials

  • Clear contact paper
  • Brown construction paper
  • Black construction paper for frame
  • Tissue paper (red, yellow, and orange)
  • Yarn
  • Hole punch

Preschool Fall Crafts Instructions for Parents To Complete Ahead of Time

  1. Place the black construction paper for the frame onto the unrolled end of the contact paper.
  2. Cut off the excess from the construction paper if it is taller than the roll of contact paper.
  3. Line up the contact and construction paper once more and flip the black paper over to measure a piece of contact paper twice as long.
  4. Cut the contact paper and set aside.
  5. Fold the piece of black construction paper for the frame in half horizontally and then again vertically.
  6. Use a ruler to measure a half-inch from the open edges without creases and draw a line.
  7. Cut along the line to remove the center of the construction paper.
  8. Unfold the frame and smooth out the creases.
  9. Peel the backing from half of the contact paper.
  10. Place the frame on the sticky, unpeeled half of the contact sheet.

Fall Crafts for Kids Instructions

  1. Trace child’s right and left hands onto brown construction paper enough for two or three hands.
  2. Cut out the handprints.
  3. Tear a large pile of 1 or 2-inch tissue paper scraps from each autumn color.
  4. Set out cups to separate each color so they stay together.
  5. Place a staggered row of handprints across the middle of the contact paper
  6. Allow child to fill in each bare tree with one color of tissue paper leaves.
  7. Bigger scraps work best in order to cover the finger and palm areas of the handprint.
  8. Allow kids to mix the tissue paper as they fill in the forest’s floor with all the colors of fallen leaves.
  9. Smaller scraps work best to give the forest floor a colorful mosaic look.
  10. Peel the backing from the other half of the contact paper as it is placed over the autumn scene to seal the sun catcher.
  11. Use a hole punch to make a hole in each of the top corners of the sun catcher.
  12. Thread yarn or twine into the holes and tie for a hanger.
  13. Tape the sun catcher in the window.

Parents can display the creation in the kitchen window for the whole family to appreciate. Everyone will enjoy the warm glow of this autumn craft throughout the fall season. And once kids are finished with their sun catcher, they might enjoy other fall craft ideas such as turning acorn caps into colorful treasures, a fall leaves craft such as a vibrant collage for the computer, or fall crafts for kids like a spicy potpourri.
