Let’s Celebrate January! January is full of lots of interesting dates and events. It is a National Hot Tea Month, National Clean Up Your Computer Month and National Glaucoma Month. Here are a few more events and some fun activities to help kids and their families celebrate them. New Year’s Day – January 1On this day we start a brand new year. During the month of January set some new goals and resolutions for you. Try keeping a journal this year. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday – January 16Read a book about his life. Make a poster to share with your family that tells about this important man. Oatmeal MonthOatmeal is great for breakfast or in a cookie. Bake some oatmeal cookies and share them with a friend this month. Or make you own instant oatmeal packages for breakfast on the go. American Patriots Born in JanuaryPaul Revere (Jan. 1, 1735), Betsy Ross (Jan. 1, 1752), John Hancock (Jan. 12, 1737), Benjamin Rush (Jan. 4, 1746), Benjamin Franklin (Jan. 17, 1706) and Ethan Allen (Jan 21, 1789) were all born in January. Celebrate the birthdays of these patriots by reading a book about the American Revolution. After your done reading make some Revolutionary Straw Paintings to hang on the wall. Alaska Statehood Alaska became a state on January 3, 1959. Watch a video about Alaska, eat salmon cakes for supper and throw snowballs at your friends. If you don’t have snow use cotton balls! Three Kings Day – January 6thEnd the holiday celebration with a Three Kings party. Invite your friends and exchange small gifts. Winnie the Pooh’s Day – January 18, 1882On a blustery day in January the author A.A. Milne was born. He was born in London and created the most lovable of all characters Winnie the Pooh. Throw a Pooh party! Serve honey sandwiches, carrot sticks and Eeyore punch (blue juice). National School Nurse Day – January 23 Where would we be without school nurses? Give yours some flowers and a hug on this day designed just to honor them.
