Let’s Celebrate March!March is full of lots of interesting dates and events. It is American Red Cross Month, Irish-American Heritage Month, National Women’s History Month and National Nutrition Month. Here are a few more events and some fun activities to help kids and their families celebrate them. Famous Americans Born in MarchRalph Waldo Emerson (March 1, 1914), Sam Houston (March 2, 1793), Luther Burbank (March 7, 1849) Joseph Priestly (March 13, 1733), Albert Einstein (born in Germany) (March 14, 1879), Andrew Jackson (March 15, 1767), Jim Bridger (March 17, 1881), Grover Cleveland (March 18, 1837) were all born in March. Other birthdays in March include William Bradford, Wyatt Earp, and Harry Houdini. Look up anyone you don’t know and read about them. Make a poster of famous people born in March. Who can you add to the list? March 1On this day Ohio became a state in 1803. Nebraska followed along in 1867. The Peace Corps was official established on the day in 1961 also. Dr. Seuss’ Birthday – March 2Read a fun book on the birthday of the beloved author. Read it in a box or with a fox. Celebrate by throwing a Dr. Seuss party. Invite your friends, dress up as your favorite character and make scrambled eggs. Alexander Graham Bell – March 3, 1847Where would we be today without the telephone? Mr. Bell invented the phone while trying to help the deaf learn. We also celebrate the anniversary of the phone this month on March 10. Make a set of phones with 2 cups and some string. Punch a small hole in the bottom of the cups. Run the string between the phones. Talk to your friends. Does it work? National Chocolate Chip Cookie WeekThe first week of March every year you eat all the chocolate chip cookies you want on this day. Bake them yourself and share some with your friends. (see recipe) Girl Scout Week – 2nd WeekLots of Girl Scout things going on in March. Kick it all of with a week long celebration honoring our Girl Scouts. March 9th Jewish Girl Scouts worship together on this day and march 10th is Girl Scout Sunday. Wear your uniforms to church on these days. National Bubble Week – 4th WeekEveryone loves bubbles! During this fun week celebrate by blowing bubbles, taking bubble baths and drinking bubbly sodas. Make colored bubbles with a bubble solution you make yourself. Incredible Kid Day – March 15Enjoy this day with an incredible kid. Do something wild and wacky. If you don’t have an incredible kid of your own borrow one and let them know how special they are. St Patrick’s DayEveryone gets to be Irish on the day. Wear green, share some blarney and enjoy Shamrock Shakes. (Simply add green food coloring to vanilla milk shakes) Colored Bubbles1 cup granulated soap or soap powder (Ivory Soap powder) 1 quart warm water Liquid food coloring Dissolve the soap in warm water then stir in a few drops of food coloring. Chocolate Chip CookiesIngredients: 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup white sugar 2 eggs 8 ounces butter, softened -1/2 teaspoon vanilla 2-3/4 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 12 ounces chocolate chips What you do: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix butter and sugar by hand until creamy. Then add the eggs and vanilla. Set aside. Mix all of the dry ingredients together in another bowl. Add the dry ingredients to the sugar mixture a little at a time. Now mix in the chocolate chips. Drop by spoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 11 minutes and no more.
