Here are some crafts that will be useful when teaching about the life of David from David the shepherd to King David! They require few materials and little preparation.
Fuzzy Hand Lamb: David the shepherd boy
Materials:
- White crayon
- Black, brown, and pink construction paper
- Scissors
- White glue
- Styrofoam tray to work on
- Cotton balls
- Hole punch
- Black sharp-pointed marker
- Thin ribbon
Directions:
- Use the white crayon to trace around your hand on the black paper. Cut the hand shape out.
- Cover the palm of the hand and the base of the thumb and fingers with glue. Then attach cotton balls to make a sheep.
- Punch an eye for the sheep from the brown paper. Use the black marker to draw a dot in the center of the eye for a pupil. Glue the eye to the middle of the thumb.
- Tie a piece of thin ribbon around the base of the thumb to form a neck for the sheep. Tie the ribbon in a bow.
- Cut a heart shape from the pink paper small enough to fit on the back of the sheep. Write "The Lord is my shepherd" and "23rd Psalm" on the heart with the marker. Glue the heart to the reverse side of the sheep.
Treasured Stones: David and Goliath
Materials:
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup used coffee grinds
- 1/2 cup salt
- 1/4 cup sand
- 1 cup water
Directions:
- Mix all dry ingredients together. Slowly add the water to make a stiff dough; you might end up using only half the water - add it slowly or your dough will be too runny!
- Knead on a floured surface until fairly smooth. Break the dough into desired rock sizes. Hide toys and surprises in the center of a ball of dough. Set in a safe place until totally dry. Atleast 3 - 4 days.
- Once it is dry, the dough will look and feel like a rock. You can carefully break open the home-made rocks with a hammer to reveal the hidden treasures inside.
Friendship Sticks: David and Jonathan Best Friends
Materials:
- Square wooden chopsticks
- Sturdy scissors
- 6 colors of acrylic paint
- Cotton swabs
- Fine-point permanent marker
- String
Directions:
- To make one, cut a 3-inch-long section from a chopstick. Use cotton swabs to paint 6 different-color stripes around the stick.
- Let the paint dry, then write a message on the stick with the marker. Tie a length of cord tightly around the top of the stick and give it to your friend.
Star of David Card: King David
Materials:
- Two colors of paper (card stock or construction paper works best)
- Scissors
- Glue
- Optional: A protractor
- Optional: Glitter or glitter glue
Directions:
- Fold a piece of paper in half.
- Fold over one side, then the other, to make two 60 degree folds. You can do this by eye, or you can use a protractor. This is a good exercise in geometry and measuring angles. You'll get a wedge shape.
- Cut off the middle part of the wedge (this will make a Star of David shape when you eventually unfold the paper).
- Cut a lot of the paper away from the sides.
- Unfold your star carefully.
- Glue the star onto a folded piece of construction paper for a great Hanukkah card.
- Optional: Decorate your star with glitter or glitter glue.
Tambourine: David the Psalmist
Materials:
- 2 paper plates (heavy-duty works best)
- Stapler or glue
- Hole punch
- String
- Jingle bells
- Crayons
Directions:
- Staple or glue two paper plates together, facing each other. Using a hole punch, make holes around the plates and tie jingle bells to the holes with string. Decorate the tambourine with crayons.
- If using staples, cover them with tape to protect little hands.
- Shake to play.
