Make a crawling beetle and amaze your friends.

This is a perfect summertime or camp craft. Goes well with a unit on insects or invertebrates. Make several and race them with your friends.

Make a Crawling Beetle

What you need:

empty walnut shell (one shell will make 2 beetles)

black, green or yellow paint

magnet

small wiggly eyes

garbage bag ties ( the kind with the thin metal wire in them)

small cardboard box (thin cardboard like a shoebox)

craft glue (tacky glue)

What you do:

1. Paint your walnut shell your favorite beetle color. Let it dry.

2. Now paint on spots or stripes if you like. Paint a small circle for the head.

3. Glue on two small wiggly eyes.

4. Turn your beetle over after it is completely dry.

5. Glue three garbage bag ties across the bottom of the walnut shell. You want the ends to stick out on either side of the walnut shell.

6. Turn your beetle upside right and bend the ties ends that stick out up to look like legs.

7. Now put your beetle on top of a thin box and put a magnet under the box.

8. Move the magnet and your beetle will crawl!
