Take an old milk carton, some paint and peanut butter and you have an innovative way to feed the birds in your yard.

Would you like to attract some birds to your backyard this summer? Well providing them with something delicious to eat

is one sure way to get them to come. In our article Easy Bird Feeders we gave you some ideas for using a bagel and a toilet

paper tube to make some feeders. Here is another great idea to go along with those other two.

This is also a great way to introduce your child to bird watching. Our family discovered this craft in a group we took part in.

Crafts like these have helped us enjoy nature in our own backyard.

Rowboat Bird Feeder

What you need:

Empty, clean half gallon milk carton (to make a smaller one use a pint size carton)

Things to decorate your carton - paint, construction paper, stickers, permanent markers

  • Hole punch
  • Two long pieces of yarn
  • 2 slices of bread
  • Peanut butter
  • Bird seed

What you do:

1. Cut milk carton in half. You want to cut the long way -from the top to the bottom.

One carton will make you two "rowboats" so be sure and invite a friend to do this with you.

2. Now decorate your boat. Paint them, put on stickers, cut out construction paper shapes and glue on. Let you imagination

run wild.

3. Next make four holes in your boat. Two holes on each side. One near the top and one near the bottom. Put the holes in

the same place on either side or you boat will be lopsided when you hang it up.

4. Put the yarn through one of the holes and tie it securely. Put the other end through the hole directly across from that hole.

Again make sure you tie is good and tight. Repeat with the other two holes. This is what you will

hang up your row boat with so make sure they are long enough.

5. Now spread the bread thickly with peanut butter. Sprinkle with birdseed. Place a piece of bread in the boat.

Hang your feeder outside and watch the birds come and enjoy the food.

This bird feeder isn't as sturdy as some and you may want to bring it inside during bad weather. You will also want to replace the peanut

butter bread periodically as well.

For even more bird fun here is a mini bird poster to print out to use as a divider in a science notebook. We also have a coloring page to help classify birds and

last but not least a barnyard birds coloring page.
