Collage name tags are so simple that even the smallest child can create them.

Names are important to children. Their name identifies them to others and to themselves. Teach your child how to spell his name and how to print it. Help your child to label her toys, books, clothes, or door with their name. Make a colorful, fun collage a name tag for their door using the instructions below.

Supplies

  • foundation material: cardboard, craft foam, wood, etc.
  • stickers, stamps, or labels
  • individual letter stencils
  • adhesive (glue, spray, or adhesive dots)
  • scissors

Instructions

  1. Punch out all the letters that are needed for the child’s name.
  2. Lay the letters out on the foundation material. Make sure they are placed tightly against each other. Trace around the outside of the name. Remove the letters.
  3. Cut along the traced lines to create the foundation piece for the name tag.
  4. Have the child decorate the entire foundation piece with stickers. They can make the arrangement as haphazard as they desire. They can (and should) place stickers on top of each other, sideways, upside down and any which way they like. The only rule is that they should try to completely cover the foundation piece.
  5. Once the foundation piece is obscured, attach the stencils to the collage using the adhesive of your choice.
  6. If necessary, trim around the name tag.

Alternative Methods for this Technique

  • It is not necessary to buy stickers for this project. Because the collage is abstract, any self-adhesive stickers, labels, or bandages would work. As a result, it is a great way to use the stickers and stamps that come inside junk mail.
  • Don’t limit yourself to words. Use any sort of stencil you want as long as it has an identifiable silhouette.
  • If the child can use scissors, they can trace around a cookie cutter, leaf, or other objects with a recognizable silhouette to create their stencil. Carefully cut out the silhouette for the collage.

Other Projects for this Technique

  • Use the technique to create name tags for a party, gift tags, bookmarks, Christmas ornaments, and gift cards.

Helpful Hint: Use painter’s tape to hang your children’s artwork on the walls. Painter’s tape is tacky enough to support most art projects but low-tack enough to not damage the surface of a door or wall.

Why Craft with Your Child

One hundred years from now…it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove, but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child. Anonymous
