Making princess hats allow guest to join the royal party with style and the birthday mom has an activity to occupy the kids.

And why not make one for each of the guest princesses as well? Not only will the craft fill time, but afterward the girls can play like they are all princesses, giving the moms a chance to talk.

This can also dub as a party favor, which can be at times the most expensive part of the party.

Supplies for Princess Hats

  • Construction paper
  • Stickers
  • Curling ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Hole punch

Making the Hats

  1. Form a cone with the construction paper. This is done by holding the paper horizontal. Take the left hand corner and roll it so that the corner touches the center of the page. Roll the other corner over the cone created by the left corner and then tape it down. Leave a pen size hole at the top.
  2. Let the kids decorate the hat with stickers and markers.
  3. While the kids are decorating their hats, cut curling ribbon into approximately three feet long pieces. Each hat needs at least four pieces but can have more. Curl the ribbon by pulling it across one blade of the scissors.
  4. Tie four or more pieces of curling ribbon together at one end and thread the knot threw the pen size hole at the top of the hat. Tape the ribbon to the inside of the hat.
  5. To add a chin strap to keep the hat on the kids’ heads, punch two holes near the bottom of the hat on opposite sides. Tie a piece of curling ribbon to each hole. A good length is approximately a foot to a foot and a half. This gives the kids enough ribbon to tie a bow under their chin.

Other Decorating Options

Decorative ribbon can also be used in the tassel and along the bottom of the hat.

To include ribbon in the tassel, cut and tie it together with the curling ribbon. It looks nice when there are different widths of ribbon at different lengths. Cut the wider ribbon just long enough to hang near the bottom of the hat and the thinner ribbon is cut longer so that it will flow with the curling ribbon.

To attach the ribbon around the bottom of the hat, use a glue stick or stapler. A hot glue gun can also be used but use great caution when children are present and have an adult put the ribbon on the hat.

Planning Ahead

If time is limited at the party or to reduce chaos, there are a few a steps that can be done before hand.

The construction paper can be made into cones and the chin straps can be added prior to the party. Cutting curling ribbon and tying them together to make the tassels are also steps that can be done. If the tassels are attached before the party, it can create problems for the kids when they are decorating the hats, so it is best to wait for the party to complete that step.

Making princess hats at a princess birthday party is like the icing windows on the castle cake; it may not be necessary but it adds the final touch. Guest also have something to take home and play with.
