Marbelized Swirly Painted Pencils

A neat craft for older kids.

Use marbelized painting techniques to design your own pencils.

The directions here are for a pencil but you could do so many things with this. See the note at the end! Another craft our 4-H group will be doing...

Marblelized Swirly Pencils

What you will need:......

  • Pencils
  • Water
  • Gallon milk jug
  • Egg carton
  • 1/8 teaspoon borax or cream of tartar
  • Oil paints
  • What you do:

1.Have an adult cut off the top of the milk jug. And clean jug out. Now fill with water, high enough to dip the pencil in, but not the pencil tip (eraser).

2.Also, flip your egg carton over and poke a hole in the tops where the eggs would have been. Set aside.

    3. Stir in 1/8 teaspoon of borax and stir until dissolved. Drop 1 drop of oil paints or any oil based paint on the top of the water, It should spread out fast. Now drop another color on top. and another on top of that color.

4.Next take a tooth pick and swirl it around. Then dip your pencil in the pain. When you get to the part of the eraser, blow the paint away from the pencil and take your pencil out.

5.Place the top of the pencil in the egg carton holes. Let dry. It may take an hour. Or you can even take a piece of clay, put it on the eraser part and dip, then just stick to the work surface.

But make sure you have the table covered with some saran wrap. Enjoy your neat pencils. You may want an adult to spray or paint on a seal of polyurethane or clear acrylic. To preserve it.

Now look around the house and be sure to ask an adult if you can dip something else. Candles work really good. Bows, paper, envelopes, gift tags

To clean up, all you have to do is take a piece of paper to get the rest of the paint off the water and throw away paper. Now you can dump the water right in the sink, with no paint to stain or clog up.

    Belinda:

This is a great idea and my mind is spinning with uses for the technique. I could see dipping cups, gift bags, wrapping paper, clear glass Xmas balls, candles, and using them for party decorations in whatever theme color you choose.

My question is what has been your experience with this technique for paper products -- do they degrade at all or get wrinkled?
