Here are a few crafts that can be used when you are teaching children about the different names for Jesus. They require few materials with little preparation.

Dove Wreath - Prince of Peace

Materials:

  • Poster board
  • Copies of doves
  • Copies of hearts
  • Red and green construction paper
  • Markers
  • Ribbons

Directions:

  1. Preparation: Cut a 6-inch circle out of poster board for each child for the base of the wreath. Make 4-6 copies of the dove for each child. Cut out several hearts for each child.
  2. Ask the children: What does the word "peace" mean to you? Explain to children that a dove is a symbol for peace.
  3. Have children draw around the heart patterns and cut out the hearts from the colored construction paper.
  4. Next, children will cut out the doves.
  5. Children will glue the doves and hearts onto the poster board circle.
  6. If time permits, they can decorate their wreath with ribbon and/or markers.

Suncatcher - Immanuel

Materials:

  • Clear sheet of transparency paper for each child
  • Permanent markers (variety of colors)
  • Hole punch
  • Yarn
  • Scissors

Directions:

  1. Read Isaiah 7:14 to the children. Ask: What does the word "Immanuel" mean? Response: God is with us.
  2. Pass out the sheets of transparency paper. Children may use it as is, or cut it into a shape.
  3. Have children write "His name will be Immanuel" in the middle of the transparency with markers.
  4. Next, let the children decorate the rest of their sheet.
  5. Punch a hole at the top and tie a piece of yarn to make a loop.
  6. They can hang it in a window and it will remind them that Jesus is with us always.

"Light of the World" Candle - Savior/Messiah

Materials:

  • Toilet paper roll for each child
  • One sheet of yellow construction paper for each child
  • Flames pre-cut from red or orange construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Glue
  • Markers
  • Stickers - optional

Directions:

  1. Preparation: Cut out flame shapes with either red or orange construction paper, enough for one flame for each child.
  2. Have children find Luke 2:1-20 in their Bibles. The teacher should read this aloud.
  3. Give each child a toilet paper roll, a piece of yellow construction paper, and a pre-cut flame piece.
  4. Have the children roll the construction paper around the toilet paper roll and tape it down (you may want to pre-cut the construction paper to fit perfectly around the toilet paper roll, or have the children do that themselves).
  5. Next, the children will glue the flame to the inside of the toilet paper roll so that it stands up out of the hole.
  6. If time permits, they can decorate their candle with stickers.

Sheep Craft - The Good Shepherd

Materials:

  • Premade cupcakes
  • Mini marshmallows
  • White icing
  • Tubes of black gel icing or chocolate morsels
  • Plastic knives

Directions:

  2. Give each child a cupcake and have them spread it with the white icing.
  3. Create eyes and a mouth on the cupcake using tubes of black gel icing or chocolate morsels
  4. Lastly, have the children cut the mini marshmallows in half and add them around the cupcake to make it look like a sheep.
