With just a few materials and simple instructions, children can do creative things with their environment. There are many outdoor art activities suitable for children.

With a crisp autumn breeze blowing into many towns, parents are looking for ways for children to enjoy the last of decent weather before winter closes in. Outdoor art projects are just one way for children to enjoy themselves creatively.

Halloween Outdoor Art Ideas

  • Pumpkin carving, with adult supervision, is a classic Halloween activity. Have children sketch a face onto a pumpkin. Parents can purchase a ridged carving knife suitable for creating the perfect jack-o-lantern.
  • Pumpkin painting is cleaner and easier than pumpkin carving, and can involve children of all ages. Use tempera paint or permanent markers to create a frightening face!
  • Have children create a creepy Halloween creature to place on the front and back doors or on the windows facing the street. They can sketch a skeleton, witch, ghost, and many more!
  • Purchase some pretend spider web and allow children to string along porches, doors, trees or other outdoor places.

Outdoor Art Ideas For Any Time of Year

There are many creative, artistic activities that children can do outside.

  • Children can take their notebook outside and sketch what is around – buildings, trees, people, animals, signs and more!

  • Children can learn about textures by placing paper on outdoor surfaces (tree bark, brick, stucco, pebbles) and rubbing the paper with a crayon.

  • Parents can set up an easel outside complete with brushes, paints, smocks and paper. Encourage children to paint their surroundings, including buildings, the sky, the sun, flowers, and insects.

  • Finger paint, sponges, stamps are all creative ways to have fun outdoors.

  • Children can collect leaves, flowers, and sticks, and either make a collage out of them or press the flowers and leaves into paper.

  • Any cement surface is perfect for sidewalk chalk! Children can make a hopscotch board, play tic tac toe, or illustrate the patio.

  • Children can collect rocks and paint faces or animals on them.

  • Make art with garbage – old cans, bottles, or plastic containers can be used to collect things from nature and set up around the yard.

  • Make a colorful flag for outdoor use by stretching an unused square portion of a sheet on a patio and painting with tempera paints.

  • Make a scavenger hunt for the children! Kids can write the clues on illustrated notes, and parents can hide treasures around the backyard.

  • Learn how to make a kite at eHow.

  • Children can write and illustrate a story based on creatures they see outdoors.

  • Children can make a birdhouse from one of the many birdhouse kits sold in hobby stores.

  • Children can make their own time capsule. They can take a shoebox and place inside a few objects of importance (but not so important that they will be missed) or things that represent a current event. Find a corner of the backyard to bury the capsule and decide how many years should pass before the family digs it up!
There are many enjoyable activities for children to do outdoors. They can decorate the yard and home for any holiday, or they can use paint, chalk, crayons, and natural ingredients such as rocks, flowers, and leaves to make the perfect art piece!
