These colorful coasters are a wonderful recycle craft. Simply take some old jar lids, add a bright picture, some paint and shellac and you have an easy practical craft.

Making crafts with kids is a wonderful way to recycle things we would normally throw away. If you do not have a space on your closet or a bin to throw in “trash” you can turn into treasures you should get one going immediately. Things like jar lids, toilet paper tubes, caps from 2 litre bottles, styrofoam trays – even the 2 litre soda bottles themselves – all of these are nice for crafts with the kids.

This fun recycle craft uses lids from off of used mayonnaise type jars or the flat lids from frozen juice containers. When you are done you have a set of coasters that is nice enough to give away as a gift and practical enough to use everyday.

Recycle Craft – Colorful Coasters

You will need:

  • 6 lids
  • Paint – you can use enamel paint or spray paint
  • Clear shellac spray
  • Paint brush
  • Scissors
  • Pictures from magazines or old cards
  • Glue

What you need to do:

1. First off gather your lids t6ogether. You want them all to be the same size. Mayonnaise jar lids are just about the perfect size to hold a glass.

2. Paint the inside and outside of the lids. If you like the color of the lid you can skip this part.

3. Cut out your favorite pictures from either a magazine or old cards. Christmas cards, birthday cards and other old holiday cards work fantastic for this type of craft. Use the lid to trace a circle around the picture you want to cut out and place in your coaster. Then cut your picture just a little bit smaller. Glue this inside the jar lid. Spray the picture with the clear shellac, covering the picture and making sure it seals around the edges.

NOTE: Instead of using a picture inside your coaster you can use a circle cut out of fabric, a colorful piece of felt or even yarn layered in a swirly pattern.

Adult Supervision Required: Only use shellac and spray paint outside or in a vary well ventilated room. Never use this type of material in a closed room.

You now have a wonderful set of coasters to use when sharing drinks with friends. These colorful coasters would make a great gift for mom or grandma. This is a great recycle craft for kids. You can also use orange juice lids and make flat coasters. Apply a circle of felt and glue it to the bottom if you make the flat coasters.
