Beat the winter blues by making cute snowman and mitten crafts with the kids using popsicle sticks, paper plates, construction paper, craft foam and a little imagination!
Whether it is for a winter theme at preschool or an activity on a snowy afternoon, these easy-to-make craft ideas are perfect for toddlers and preschoolers to create.
Popsicle Stick Snowman Fridge Magnet
Not requiring a lot of preparation this snowman craft is especially cute if some of the snowman’s features are a little crooked and off-centre.
Materials
7 popsicle or craft sticks
black and white paint
2 inch square piece of cardboard cut from a recycled cracker box
googly eyes
various coloured craft foam sheets including black and orange
adhesive craft magnets
white glue
Have the kids paint six of the popsicle sticks with white paint on one end to the middle of the sticks. Paint the other end of the sticks with black paint and also paint the last popsicle stick all black.
When the paint is dry, glue the six black and white sticks to each other by spreading glue between the popsicle sticks and gently holding together. To make the magnet stronger, glue the cardboard piece to the back of the sticks as well.
Glue the black painted stick across the attached popsicle sticks where the black paint meets the white paint to make a brim for the hat.
Out of craft foam cut an orange carrot nose, a black mouth and any decorations the children would like for the hat.
Glue the googly eyes, nose and mouth of the snowman onto the white part of the snowman’s head with the black hat at the top. Attach the hat decorations with white glue.
Attach the adhesive magnet to the back of the snowman on the cardboard piece.
Let the kids print their names in silver or gold pens on the hat of the snowman to make great keepsake gift tags for family members.
Paper Plate Winter Hat
This simple craft is perfect to do with a group of preschoolers for a winter clothing theme.
Materials
various coloured paper plates cut in half
strips of coloured construction paper 1 1/2 inches wide by 10 inches long
2 inch circles cut from construction paper
scrap construction paper
white glue
Let each child choose half a paper plate for the hat.
Help them glue one strip of paper onto the straight edge of the plate, making a cuff for the hat.
Glue a circle onto the top of the hat for a pom-pom.
Let the kids cut out circles, stripes and other shapes out of construction paper to decorate their winter hat.
For a variation, use sheets of coloured craft foam and pre-cut foam shapes instead of construction paper to add the details to the hat.
Foam Mitten Wreath
This seasonal wreath makes a nice co-operative activity for the classroom as every child can contribute to the final product.
Materials
foam sheets of various colours
foamie shapes
white glue
Give each child a different coloured adult-sized mitten cut out of craft foam. The mittens should all be the same size.
Cut a cuff for each mitten out of a contrasting colour.
Have the kids decorate their mitten with foam shapes ensuring they are all decorating the same side of the mitten.
Once all the mittens are complete attach them together in a circular shape with the cuffs in the middle of the wreath and finger part of the mitt facing out from the centre. If attaching the wreath to a wall or board, white glue will secure the mittens in place. For a wreath to hang from a door, cut a wreath shape out of cardboard to glue onto the back of the mittens for extra strength.
Twelve mittens make a nice sized door wreath for a gift to give to someone who needs some cheer during the winter months.
