Lots of fun ideas for making snowflakes, so gather up your scissors, glue and glitter and let's get started.

Winter is a time of snow and ice for many of us, and nothing is more beautiful than the wonderfully intricate snowflake designs. Snowflake crafts are appropriate all year long. Here are several easy kids crafts for your family to enjoy. Older kids will enjoy catching a snowflake while the younger ones can make handprint snowflakes.

Catch a Snowflake

What you need:

  • Piece of glass - a piece from a 4 X 8 picture frame works perfect
  • Hairspray - it needs to be aerosol hairspray, the pump kind will not work
  • Snow

What you do:1. Place your piece of glass and your can of hairspray in the freezer. You want to leave them in there so they are good and cold BEFORE it snows. If you try to do this without freezing the piece of glass or the aerosol hair spray it will not work. Now wait for some big fat snowflakes to start falling on a blustery winter day.

2. Once it starts snowing get out your hairspray and glass and spray the chilled glass on one side with a light coat of hairspray. Take your glass outside and hold the glass with the hairspray side facing up. Let some snowflakes gently fall onto your glass.

3. After you have gathered several snowflakes onto your glass go inside and let your glass warm up in the room for about 15 minutes. You should see residue that looks like your snowflakes on the glass!

This makes a great science project as well as just a fun winter activity for kids.

Hand Print Snowflakes

What you need:

  • Colored construction paper (if not cutting out the snowflakes)
  • White construction paper if you are going to cut out the snowflakes
  • White poster paint
  • glitter
  • string for hanging your snowflakes

What you do:

1. Decide whether you want to cut out your snowflakes or simply make them on colored paper and hang them up. If you are going to cut them out make your snowflakes on white paper.

2. Place some white poster paint onto a paper plate and spread out in a thin layer. Let your child gently press his hand into the paint. Now press his hand onto the construction paper. Repeat the process rotating the paper and making hand imprints in a round design. You can do 3, 4 or even 6 hand prints in a circle with the fingers pointing out to make a lovely snowflake.

3. Before the paint dries sprinkle glitter onto the wet paint. Let dry thoroughly. If you made your snowflakes on white paper carefully cut around your hand prints. Hang your snowflakes up for others to enjoy.

If you enjoyed these crafts you will enjoy our winter wonderland painting, sparkly ornaments and snow candles.
