Colourful and inspired by spring gardens, these simple crafts are great to do with a group of preschool children and make wonderful gifts.

Every spring, young children and their caregivers are inspired to create wonderful masterpieces that reflect the change of the season. Bright colours, things that grow and flower focused creations are often where imaginations flourish. This spring, try these garden inspired crafts with the kids.

Handprint Flower Pictures

  • Trace the hand of each child onto at least three different colours of brightly coloured construction paper.
  • Cut the handprints out and let the kids glue their hands onto a piece of paper, with the fingers all pointing to the top of the page.
  • At the bottom of each hand, draw a stem and leaves to complete the flowers. Have the children add other details to their picture such as bugs, butterflies and landscape.

Growing Seeds

  • Choose an easy to look after seed variety, such as pansies and let the kids put dirt into foam cups.
  • Instruct the kids to plant the seeds as per the directions on the package and place in a bright spot.
  • Let the kids water their plants and watch the changes from day-to-day.

Pinwheel

  • Cut a 6 inch by 6 inch square out of colourful construction paper. Fold the square diagonally one way, unfold and then fold diagonally the other way.
  • Open up the square again and cut from each of the corners into the centre of the square about 3 inches, making four triangles pointing to the middle of the square.
  • Poke a hole in the centre of the square using a pencil.
  • Using a hole punch, put a hole in the left corner of each upside down triangle.
  • Match the hole of one triangle with the hole in the centre of the square. Do the same with the triangle next to the first one, keeping the first triangle in place. Continue with the last two triangles.
  • Hold the overlapped triangles in place using a brass paper fastener by pushing the tabs through all the holes.
  • Punch a hole through the top of a large drinking straw and push the tabs through that hole as well, spreading the tabs just enough to secure all four petals of the pinwheel, but allowing it to spin.
  • Let the kids decorate their pinwheels using stickers, markers and stamps.

Decorated Flower Pot

  • Purchase 6 inch terracotta or plain clay pots from a garden supply store.
  • Using colourful poster paint, let the kids paint their own design all over the outside of the flower pot. For smaller children, help them make a hand print using the paint on the side of the pot.
  • Once the paint has dried, help the children glue ribbon, buttons or lace to the pot if they would like to add more decoration.
  • Since this craft is likely to become a keepsake, make sure the children print their name and date on the flower pot. To give as a gift, put a package of seeds in the pot, along with small, inexpensive garden tools.

Great as gifts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, these crafts can also inspire kids to give handmade creations for other occasions year round. For other seasonal craft ideas check out Summer Theme Crafts for Kids and Simple Fall Theme Crafts to Make with Young Kids.
