Perfect for outside summer creativity, kids will love making a snake, creating bubble prints and looking through a kaleidoscope made from toilet paper rolls.
Using empty toilet paper rolls for summer crafts is a cheap and easy way to entertain preschoolers and toddlers in the warm summer months. Include some toilet paper rolls in the craft box for weekends away at the cottage and for camping trips as well.
Toilet Paper Roll Snake
Materials:
toilet paper roll
paint
googly eyes
white glue
markers
scrap paper
Let the kids paint the outside of the toilet paper roll however they choose. For a longer snake, use a paper towel roll or instead of a toilet paper roll.
Once the paint is dry, make a spiral cut around the toilet paper roll from the top to the bottom so the roll becomes a coil.
Cut a tongue out of construction paper and glue it and the eyes onto the head of the snake.
This craft is ideal for a theme on reptiles and is very easy to do with a group of kids in a summer camp setting.
Toilet Paper Roll Bubble Stamps
Materials:
white paper
two toilet paper rolls
blue and green paint
Spread a piece of white paper on a flat surface and put some paint onto margarine tub lids.
Show the kids how to use the end of the toilet paper roll dipped in paint to make circle prints. Cover the paper with the toilet paper roll prints to create a bubble-like effect.
Great as a background for an underwater picture, this craft works well for water and summer themed activities.
Toilet Paper Roll Kaleidoscope
Materials:
toilet paper roll
waxed paper
crayon stubs, unpeeled
iron
old cheese grater
elastic band
two towels
Cut two squares of waxed paper 4 inches in size.
Show the kids how to grate various colours of crayon onto one piece of the waxed paper. Place the other piece of waxed paper over top.
Place the waxed paper and crayons between two towels and let the kids rub a warm iron over the top towel.
Check the waxed paper periodically to see if the wax is melting. Once the crayons have melted and the waxed paper is sticking together, wrap it over the end of a toilet paper roll and hold it in place with an elastic band.
Show the kids how to look through their kaleidoscopes by pointing the waxed paper end toward a window and looking through the other end.
