Kids love summer and kids love crafts. Combine the two with these wonderful ideas!
Fanciful Butterflies - Make bunches of these butterflies to hang as party decorations!
Materials:
Tissue paper cut into 4 inch x 4 inch squares (various colors)
Pipe cleaners (matching colors to the tissue paper)
String
Directions:
Stack 2 pieces of tissue paper (can be two different colors) and trim the edges to look like butterfly wings.
Fold the piper cleaner in half way over the wings, bunching the tissue paper just slightly.
Twist the piper cleaner ends together.
Curl the excess pipe cleaner pieces around a pencil to form the antennae.
Tie a piece of string at the head of the butterfly and the back of the butterfly, around the pipe cleaner, so you can hang your butterfly evenly.
Ice Cube Necklace - Cool fashion!
Materials:
Plastic lanyard
Ice cub tray
Beads, button, and other embellishments
Tape
Directions:
Tie a knot in one end of the lanyard.
Thread at least one button or other embellishment onto the lanyard so that pieces lie in a cup of the ice cube tray.
Knot the other end of the lanyard when done.
Add water to the ice cube tray (you will only be using one side of it ), making sure that the buttons, etc. are submerged in the water. Tape the lanyard down as you go to keep it from floating.
It takes about 2 hours for the ice cubes to form. Simply pop them out, tie the necklace around your neck, and you have a "cool" fashion statement.
Dip-Dyed Greeting Cards
Materials:
Newspaper
Food coloring
Water
Plain white paper towels
Construction paper
Scissors
Glue stick
Pen or pencil
Directions:
Cover your work space with newspaper.
Use shallow bowls to put a few drops of food coloring into. Add 2 tablespoons of water to dilute the dye.
Fold a plain white paper towel four times and dip the corners, edges, and folds into different colors of the dye. Open it up and lay it on the newspaper to dry.
Dip more paper towels into different combinations to make new patterns. Open each one and let dry on the newspaper.
Fold a piece of construction paper in half to form your card. You can get creative by cutting shapes out of the construction paper, or use it as is.
When the paper towel is dry, cut out itneresting parts of the design into shapes. Glue the shapes onto the front of the card. Now write your message inside.
Colorful Flowers
Materials:
Green and yellow copy paper
Pencil
Scissors
Hole punch
Straw
Glue stick
Purple tissue paper
Ribbon
Directions:
Draw a leaf shape on green paper, folding the paper several times to make several leaves at once. Cut out the leaf.
Punch a hole through the center of the leaf and thread onto a straw. Stick the leaf to the straw with the glue stick.
Cut three layers of purple tissue paper into a flower shape and punch a hole through the center. Cut a small rectangle of yellow paper for the center of the flower.
Thread the flower shapes onto the end of the straw. Dab some glue onto the yellow center and stick it to the top of the straw.
Tie a ribbon around the straw and use on its own or pop it into a pot with selection of other paper flowers.
