With a little glue and some imagination, preschoolers and toddlers can create unique Christmas and winter decorations out of empty toilet paper rolls.
Plentiful, cheap and very versatile, empty toilet paper rolls are a good basic craft material to have on hand for preschoolers and toddlers. If toilet paper rolls are not available, use paper towel rolls cut various sizes to substitute for the crafts.
Reindeer Finger Puppet
Materials:
two brown toilet paper rolls
hot glue
brown pipecleaners
white glue
googly eyes
small red pom-pom
With the help of an adult, have the children cut one of the toilet paper rolls into thirds.
Attach one of the cut toilet paper roll sections onto a full toilet paper roll by hot gluing the upper rim of the full roll to the outside of the cut toilet paper roll. Place the cut roll on the end of the full roll with part of the roll hanging off one side to make the reindeer’s head.
Cut two pieces of pipecleaner into seven inch lengths. Let the kids make antlers for the reindeer by bending the pipecleaners into various shapes. Join the ends of the pipecleaners together and glue them onto the back of the reindeer head.
Using white glue let the kids attach the eyes and nose of the reindeer for the finishing touch.
Perfect as a group craft for Christmas parties, these finger puppets also make unique holiday tree decorations.
Toilet Paper Roll Snowflake
Materials:
white toilet paper roll
glitter glue or sequins
ribbon
Help the children cut empty toilet paper rolls vertically into five equal sections, starting at the top edge and going to ½ an inch from the bottom edge.
Fold down each of the five cut “arms”, so there is a round circle in the middle and the arms are reaching out like a star.
Cover each of the arms with white or glitter glue and sprinkle colourful sequins over the glue.
Once the glue is dry punch a hole in the end of one of the snowflake arms and thread a ribbon through to tie a knot for hanging.
Simple for kids to make as Christmas tree decorations or as a craft for a winter theme, these snowflakes can be decorated with buttons, beads and stickers as well.
Toilet Paper Roll and Tissue Box Snow Castle
Materials:
empty tissue box with the plastic removed
four toilet paper rolls
scrap construction paper, tissue paper and cardboard
white paint
cotton balls
masking tape
white glue
To make the castle towers, attach two toilet paper rolls end to end with masking tape. Do the same to the other two toilet paper rolls. Empty paper towel rolls also work well for towers.
With the tissue box sitting on its side the long way, attach the towers on both ends of the box with masking tape. The opening of the tissue box is the door of the castle.
Let the kids paint the box and toilet paper rolls with white paint and then glue cotton balls all over it.
Help the kids add flags, windows and doors to their castles by cutting shapes from scrap paper and gluing them as desired.
By using a variety of box sizes and shapes, the kids can create several snowy buildings for action figures, dolls and stuffed animals to live in.
Toilet paper rolls can be used in all kinds of preschooler and toddler craft projects. For more ideas on seasonal crafts using toilet paper rolls read Spring Toilet Paper Roll Crafts.
